2006 Buffalo gold coins

I recently became interested in US coins and wondered why some of the 2006 Buffalo 50 cents are minted with a W and some are not. I realize that the W is the mint mark for West Point, but why are only some minted with the W?

The proof issues have a W mintmark on them for West Point while the non-proof issues do not have the W mintmark.

One minor correction, the denomination of the American Buffalo Gold coin is $50, not 50-cents... not that you're going to spend them, but it's a minor nit.
