Two Trivia Questions (Seated Dollars)

12 posts in this topic

Ahhh, my favorite topic!

As many of us know, there's been no real, authoritative published work on on the study of Seated Dollar dies.

Let's see how much unpublished knowledge there is among us...

1. Walter Breen claimed there's two varieties of the '59-S: one RPD, the other a normal date. Most modern students of this series believe that Breen was wrong, and that there is a relationship between these two so-called varieties. What is this?

2. All my With Motto Seated Dollars, including the proofs share this common reverse die feature. What is this? (About two years ago, Michael Fey wrote an article, published in the Gobrecht Journal, about this ``special'' feature.)

Standard prizes for getting either question correct...

Thank you Heritage auction archives. laugh.gif

They list the motto as being doubled on a few pieces, and pointed out that as being the area where it is easiest to detect. They do not make mention that all With Motto proofs have doubling.
