After almost ten years of (not so) diligent searching...

I finally ran across a 1911 Canadian 50 cent in the grade range I was looking for. But after a week of watching the price slowly creep up near the right level, I found myself less and less interested in it. I found no regret watching the last few seconds tick off the clock yesterday. I just really didn't like the coin. It could be another long watch waiting for the next one. Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

So, what do you think the real grade is on this going by Canadian grading standards? It went for just slightly higher than my estimate.

Here's another one if you want to guess on it too.

VF25? Zar, you're a generous grader, I voted VG ,and if the reverse was posted I could have even gone down to Good 4. Spiny said Canadian standards, ie ICCS like, which I assume he considers stricter than US ones.

893scratchchin-thumb.gif... I can't make that link work. Anyway, "no results found for ICCS VF25".

Most of the time you can grade just from the obverse. Here's the reverse, though.

Ok Dimitri - Perhaps VF25 was a little too generous. I'd certainly call it a Fine grade though. There's still plenty of detail left to see imo. I'd go F15-VF20. I see plenty of coins being graded as Fine on the threads ATS which are much more worn then the above coin.

BTW you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge on Canadian grading. confused.gif

I based my standards on pure American grading standards. crazy.gif

O/T - Nice Franc in your auction Dimitri. I tried my best. wink.gif

Dimitri is correct. There are definitely differences in grading standards. I find the Canadian grades to be more like what US grades were in the 60s and 70s. Even more conservative than typical wear described in the ANA grading guide for US coins (which seems to be completely ignored anymore).

And of course, Canadian pricing is based on Canadian grading, so using another standard could lead to problems.

Compare them to the coins here.

It just seems odd to me to put up an old authentication that you can't even read and the minimal effort into auctioning it.

The first 1911 spiny posted, not the eBay coin, is a Fine if a dealer is selling, and a VG10 if buying. Looking at Charlton's Standard Grading Guide for Canadian Coins, the coin is definately better than VG-8. It looks more like the photo of the Fine coin.

The 1921 is VG obv and Fine reverse.

Yea, verily-- three's the rub. 893censored-thumb.gif

I voted VG8 for the first and AU50 for the second. The eBay fiddy cen' piece looked OK to me! thumbsup2.gif
