Chicago Bell coin info. please

7 posts in this topic

Aquired this awhile back and looking for someone that knows its story. All I know is that this commemorative coin was minted from the Chicago bell after the fire in 1871. But as far as how many were made or the exact date and how it was distributed...no idea. Planning on selling it soon, but before I do that I would like to give the potential buyer a better description. Thanks

It may have been struck at the US Mint or might have been done privately. Later tonight I may have some time to look the piece up and will share what I find with you.

Nice medal. 500 made at the US mint.

CM-13 The engraver was William Barber.

Edit to add, the obverse was also used outside the mint for a medal for the Chicago Expo of 1873.
