NEWPS from a local coin show

10 posts in this topic

We had a local coin show here in Osaka, Japan today.

The show is much smaller than a show like Long Beach/ANA show in the States and I think there were about 40 tables. I wanted to get a 1 yen gold in GEM condition because other denom. with same design are too expensive for me.

I looked through the show cases, but all I could find were unc at best. Lots of 1 yen gold, but no GEM. Instead, I picked up other types for my set.

The picture above is 100 yen silver from Shouwa41(1966). It's not easy to find nicely toned one, but this one has some nice brown toning...about $3.5 thumbsup2.gif

Next one is 50 yen from Shouwa39(1964). A tad boring coin, but I wanted it for my type set.

And next one is 50 sen coin from Shouwa11(1936) I like this series because it's cheap and beautiful. They often come with rainbow toning, too. The one I bought today has very very clean surface....I grade it MS68 although I can't grade wink.gif

And here's another 50 sen from Meiji4(1871) Although it looks lifeless in picture, it has nice luster and some neat original toning in person. I think it's the highlight of my NEWPS.

I bought some large coins, too. The one above is 1 yen silver from Meiji18.

Scuffy on reverse, but it has PL surface on both sides whitch adds eye appeal to this coin. I've long wanted 1 yen from early Meiji Period. Seller claimed it's UNC+ whitch I didin't agree, but it's getting VERY HARD to find true gem from this era and if you find one, you have to pay more than what JINDA catalog(Japanese red book) says.

Thanks laugh.gif

Talking about toning, I found a monster toned copper-nickel 5 sen at the show.

I would have bought it in a heartbeat if it hadn't had a nasty PVC stain along the rim frustrated.gif

My favorite is 1 Rin copper from early Meiji period.

Small, simple and beautiful.

Nice pleasing coin, looks mostly red. Is my understing that collectors in Japan have a strong preference for fully red copper?

My coin came from the Heritage auction, while I was flipping through the lots wafter checking out the MS67 yen thisone jsut jumped out at me. Hertiage's picture was pretty unflattering.

Yes, and some Japanese automatically grade unc copper down to AU if a coin has toning.Similar to EAC, I guess.

I got a very nice 2 sen copper with pretty toning cheap because of the toning. I tought I was extremely lucky until it got bagged by PCGS for questionable color wink.giffrustrated.gif

You send stuff to PCGS from Japan? That's dedication! Sorry to hear about the bodybag.

Here's a nice rin I bought from Greg a while back, it has lovely burgundy toning:
