Interesting Find on eBay... Silver Dollar Blank Planchet!

I don't know if I can afford this, but I found a Silver Dollar Ty2 Planchet graded MS-60 by PCGS.

 

Maybe I can get some money towards it if someone will buy the Texas Coin and Currency Set I have listed at a "good" price!!

That is a neat looking coin er…planchet. I would be hesitant though – 96% is terrible feedback. You have to go out of your way to get that low.

I think Type 1 is a planchet without a rim, and Type 2 is a blank planchet with the rim.

I called PCGS (there is a phone number below the cert lookup page on the web site) and they do not know what type of dollar it is - could be anything. Could be a trade dollar too...

Fletcher is a member here, too, though he hasn't participated in quite a while. I've never understood the grading of a planchet, and I think that authentication could be tricky business.

By the way, a trade dollar planchet would weigh 420 grains, versus 412 1/2 grains for a "regular" silver dollar.

Newbie question, but what would stop one from creating a planchet mold, melting down a common silver dollar and pouring it into the mold. Then send it off to a TPG and selling it for $700?

Nothing. It could even be a planchet from a ben franklin commem dollar or something like that.

Planchets are punched from sheets of metal, they are not made from molds. If someone were to try to make one from a mold it would be easily identified as a fake due to the seam that would be left from the molding process.

 

Of course, if someone had the know-how, necessary machinery, and the inclination, it probably could be done. It would have to be the correct weight, diameter, and thickness. Would such a fake fool the TPG’s, I don’t know.
