Similiarities between collecting coins and collecting baseball cards !

4 posts in this topic

Hi Gang !

I just started building a small baseball card collection. I am doing this share a common interest with my youngest son. He has always been sports minded and has a definitive interest in baseball cards. I noticed that there are several similiarities between my passion of collecting coins and that of collecting baseball cards. Professionally graded cards are the best investment. Also, it would seem that there are three top grading/authentication services. Two of which are subsidiariers of the top two coin services. PSA which is the card counterpart of PCGS and SGC which is the counterpart to NGC, with Beckett I suppose as third.

In coins I collect only key dates from the various series, I suppose I will collect similiarly with baseball cards with a few exceptions. I have decided to split my baseball card collection into two parts, one: a collection of vintage rookie cards of premier players. two: a mixed collection of vintage and more modern premier players that my son will recognize and learn to recognize. Something fun for the both of us to share and learn from one another. Although I have extensive experience in coins, I am sad to say that I am sorely lacking in the baseball card department. But I am learning ! I have made a list of twenty or so cards that I will purchase over time for my own vintage collection. I just recently purchased an autographed baseball PSA/DNA certfied for my son with 13 Hofer signatures. Mantle, Mays, Banks, Aaron, Jackson, Stargell, Williams, Mcovey,Killibrew, Schmidt, Robinson, Mathews, and Yastrzemski. I think it will be a great investment and an heirloom he will treasure. It will make a great center piece for our collection. thumbsup2.gif

It's always good to have another hobby/pasttime to fall back on when you occasionally feel discouraged in your primary interest.

At one time I thought that I might like to collect baseball cards. I accumulated 14,000 before I realized that it wasn't interesting to me, but I also have 1,000+ shot glasses, 300+ casino chips, 200+ French & Belgian medals and 100+ autographed billiard balls. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Sounds like you have developed a severe case of collectitis. Don`t worry ! The prognosis isn`t all bad. Although collectitis normally isn`t terminal, there are certain addictive symptoms that may appear from time to time. Some may lead to other afflictions such as numipsycosis( an obsession for collecting coins). I too suffer from this particular disease. The upside is that in some case these afflictions can prove to be very profitable especially over the long term. Good luck and best wishes in your collecting endeavours ! 893applaud-thumb.gif
