defective Dies??

I have two lincoln cents, one is a 1988-P with raised metal, on the left side from the beginning of Lincolns Bust all the way to the IN of In God We Trust.

 

The other is a 1989-P with Raised metal under the In God We Trust Motto, all the way through and under.

Since 1982 and the adoption of copper-coated zinc planchets, many Lincoln Cents have shown lumps and strips of raised metal from occluded gases trapped between the layers and then compressed during striking. It sounds from the description of your coins that this may be what you have.
