I did a "reverse snatch" at a coin show. It felt good.

28 posts in this topic

Well, I stopped by the recent Fremont Coin show. I offered a few coins to dealers. Most were very nice and courteous. I offered one coin in particular to a specialist in a certain US coin category. I asked him if he had a use for this coin. It was nice, white and very original, with very faint patina. He looked at it, studied it, and used a loop. He appeared very interested, but immediately said it would not cross into a PGCS holder. So I did a "reverse snatch" of the coin from his hands, and he looked amazed, and I felt good. Ususally, it's the dealer who "snatches" coins from collectors.

Tip to dealers: Don't badmouth coins if you want to buy them.

Hum, did he say why he didn't believe it would cross? I like the "reverse snatch" approach. Keep em' guessing. I don't like it when dealers are over confident.

I've never been to a show.

They snatch them out of your hands if you don't buy them?!? 893whatthe.gif

Doesn't sound like a good way to do business. If one of them did that to me

I don't think I would visit their booth again - ever.

Happened to me once. It was at a local show, this guy's always got a table. I picked up a State Quarter roll, to look in the end, before I could even see which state it was, he snatched it out of my hand and put it back behind the table. I purposely avoid his table, even ifhe has something that I need.

Why not Hays? Any particular reason? I love seeing all the coins that I have only seen in pictures right in front of me. Pine Tree Shilling comes to mind.

Good for you Chad thumbsup2.gif

You shouldn't put up with that sort of krap from someone you might hand

your hard-earned cash to.

I've found that most of the coin dealers here are big [embarrassing lack of self control]es and could care less if they get the little man's money or not. Then again, some other guys will bargain with you for days to get your pocket change. It's a love/hate hobby I guess.

Do you mean "Why haven't I been to a show?" or "Why wouldn't I put up with

a rude dealer?"

If it's the first one: geography - no shows close to me, but I will get to Baltimore one of these days

If it's the second one: I don't put up with any rude salespeople. Taking my

business elsewhere is the best revenge anyway.

The best revenge would bring a small child with you, giving them a slushie, and have the child hover over the display cases. The dealer would go mad afraid that the child would get slushie juice all over their pretty little coins. I would love to see the look on his face...

I was asking why you hadn't been to a show but that latter answer was also entertaining.

We have two in Boston every year (more outside of Boston but 2 downtown where I live). It's funny cause you can no longer smoke in public buildings in Boston but the bourse always smells like cigarettes. It surprises me everytime.* Anyway, it's neat because I can't afford all the coins that I want, of course, but it is nice to see them in person. It’s like a museum in that respect. The difference being that everything is actually for sale. Pretty cool! thumbsup2.gif

* No offense intended to people who smoke. I'm a strong believer that what you do should be up to the government! tongue.gif No not really...it should be up to you.

I opened a TGI Friday’s in Seekonk, Mass. and had to go to Boston for

several meetings - craziest driving I’ve ever seen. How’s that Big Dig going?

Terrible! The concrete slabs in the tunnels leak and occasionally fall on and kill people. The most recent story is that there is something about duct tape (I couldn't stomach reading it). It's a mess. I think we're going to have to do the whole thing over.

The only bright spot, for me, is that my wife and I work within walking distance of our apartment. We don't even own a car. Just rent them for vacations and whatnot. For me, it's the only way I can survive the city. We also live within walking distance of fanuil hall and all the original Irish Pubs thumbsup2.gif

Edited to add: I thought you were an artist?

I am, but I was a restaurant manager for years. I worked for TGI Friday's for

18 years - mostly as a bartender and waiter, later a bar manager. All I did

was open store up and down the east coast. I don't think I stayed in any

one place more than 6 months. Glad to be out of that business.

They are going to have to REDO that dig?!? Holy cow, it’s already the

most expensive public works project ever… wow. Other than that - AND the

crazy driving, Boston is a cool town - one of the few “walking cities” left.

Sorry you shouldn't quote me on that. They are definately going to have to redo parts of the big dig but not the whole thing. Just feels like it to those of us who have been living it for....how many years now? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif I can't even recall. 10?

" Reverse snatch"

This thread is disapointing on so many levels.

I agree. It had a real sexual sound to it and it didn't deliver...which may be a good thing as it's Truth we're talking about.

There has been an awful lot of psycho-sexual talk on the boards recently. It's very disturbing.....
