I don't know how many still exist, but I figured it was

worth what I paid for it (under $10) especially if it was indeed silver?

I have certainly NOT been able to find such prices for "comparable"

US coins from 1836!!

Yes, that is indeed a shilling, and it is indeed silver. It is also in good condition for the price you paid. It looks original, with nice color. I have been trying to get one of these on Ebay for some time, and have not been able to get a good one for the right price. I am trying to work on a type collection of shillings. In that condition, I wouldn't be surprised to see $15-$18 on Ebay. So, good purchase.
