Chief Running Antelope.

Chief Running Antelope became the head chief of the Hunkpapa tribe of Sioux in 1851. He was considered to be a brave warrior and became the spokesperson for his people.

This engraving of him caused lots of ill-will, because it showed the Chief wearing another nation's head dress. The head dress that the Chief posed in was too tall for the engraving, so another was used for the final engraving.

Houston Benge Teehee was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. His signature is on the bill indicated above. Kevin Teehee tells that his great uncle came from Tahlequah, OK, which was the Cherokee nation capitol. Houston worked his way through local government, eventually to find work in Washington. This was a particularly noteworthy feat given that at the time, American Indians were not granted legal citizenship. He was appointed to the post of Register of the Treasury during Woodrow Wilson's administration.
