Are There Any Coins You Will Not "Reverse Side Up" upon demand?

4 posts in this topic

If a submitter requests the Reverse-side-up when the coin is slabbed, do you always comply?

Are there guidelines you follow that prevent some coins from being flipped in the holder even when the submitter asks you to do so?

Braddick,

NGC will place a coin "reverse up" in the holder as long as there is an apparent reason for it to be displayed that way. This almost always means that the coin will be of highly attractive color on the reverse, or if the coin displays a major mint error on the reverse side. We don't want to get into placing the reverse up for lesser reasons or in cases where the dealer and collecting public can not immediately understand the reason for its display in that manner.

Question: how about an overmintmark coin where the mintmark is on the reverse? If the coin derives the majority of its value from the overmintmark, that might be a compelling reason despite the small size involved.

At this time, NGC will only place the coin reverse-up if there is a compelling reason due to eye appeal or if the coin is a major mint error and so described. These mint errors will usually be major struck thrus, striking errors such as brockages and the like. While the over-mintmark is the feature item on a coin as you describe, we feel that normal display is appropriate for those coins.
