Someone wanted some toning....This is the best I could on short notice

I don't know, but let me know if you find out. I have the EXACT 3 raised thingy's right above the "1" on a 1885-s Morgan. I've never been able to find anyone that could help me. I'll dig up a pic.

It actually is over the 8"s more than the "1". Here's another pic.

 

What do you think could cause such a thing?

Looks like dropped denticles to me. This would cause an incuse impression in the die and impart raised bumps in the coin.

What the heck is a "countiung" wheel? And how could it leave a "raised" pattern on the coin?

That's what i originally thought, but was told the metal from the denticles would be too soft to make an "impression" in the die. confused-smiley-013.gif

Here's how to put your attached image into the body of your post -
