Is this an error?

14 posts in this topic

Take a look at this. My first thought was a dropped letter, but the seller says it is raised. A dropped letter would be incused, right? Let me know what this is, and what it is worth (It is more than I am going to spend anyways, but just curious).

pictures are too small to determine if there is an error. He circled it and all but I am not really seeing it. The toning is 100% NT btw, but not something I would really go after.

Natural toning – really? Hum…

I thought the darkest part of the toning should be in the lowest parts of

the coin. The darkest value on this coin is on the reverse at about 4 o’clock

on top of the LA in dollar – one of the highest points on the coin. Again on

the reverse, the left side of the bell is higher and much darker than the field

beside it. I’m not being argumentative Bruce, I would trust your judgment

over my own. I’m just trying to learn here.

I think you pose a great question, and your scenerio would hold up for some types of toning, but thin about a roll or a bag. What touches the bag or roll first.. the highest points at times. Just my thoughts on this coin.

since we are on that subject.... What do you think on this coin Hays?

A lower-end toner. Wouldn't mind having it, but wouldn't pay much for it.

I’m going to say AT here too.

It seems to be missing some of the spectrum of colors going basically from

blue to yellow. The blue splotches right under the chin and on the neck make

me nervous too. I know that a mint bag is more pliable than an album so

it doesn’t concern me that toning goes over her face. This one leaves me in

doubt so I would run from it.

893scratchchin-thumb.gif You know something Bruce?

I think you have helped a lot with your

"guess the grade posts" How about

doing some "AT or NT" posts?

27_laughing.gif You would have to link Ebay pics

because I doubt you own many AT coins!

Just a thought...

Hays this is a tough one for people who are not really into toning as a specialty. This coin had been sitting for about 20 years when I got to see it. The toning on this coin is 100% NT. Now ask me if I can tell you how it go that way and I could not sayfor 100% sure. But the surface at one point came in contact with something to make it tone.... I think you also make a good point about AT vs NT post. I might try some of those when I get back from vacation in 2 weeks. I also got another cool post coming up when I get back.... Hint have your camera or scanner ready!

I agree, some AT vs NT posts would be great. I know I have no experience with this issue, so some practice would do me good.

Thanks for the opinions on the Franklin, I agree that it is NT, but unattractive.
