2005 $20 Gold Eagles, PCGS MS69

16 posts in this topic

I received an e-mail from a bullion dealer I have dealt with in the past, and they are offering these coins at $35 over spot. I'm not a gold collector, but is this a fair price?

They are certified by PCGS – wouldn’t their guarantee protect you?

I can state without a shadow of a doubt that PCGS has never certified any 2005 $20 gold eagles.

I’ll bow to your greater knowledge any day.

I dealt with apmex before and never had any problems.

I’m stunned.

Sorry Hays,I was just messing with you.Truth be told, they are $25 gold eagles not $20 tongue.gif

That looks like a pretty good deal to me at $35 over spot for the 1/2 ouncers. I've seen them elsewhere for $45-60 over spot, however that could be because they were fixed listings and gold just dropped after they were listed. So I'd say that's about the going rate and you couldn't got wrong...

Here are the completed eBay auctions for this date,so you could compare the ending price with the bullion value on that day: completed listings

The only current offerings are from two different sellers who are both asking $399 per coin.

Sorry, Hayden, it's my mistake. I didn't read the e-mail carefully enough. APMEX didn't state that they were $20 Eagles, they made a reference that the design was influenced by the St. Gaudens $20. My faux pas! But, they are selling the 1 0z. Eagles for $35 over spot.

$35 over spot on a gold coin of that size is a reasonable premium, especially as that includes the cost of certification. However, the real question would be whether you really want to buy gold right now. This MAY be at or near the top of the market

... or it may not be. I don't know, but am only mentioning this as something for you to consider before you purchase.
