Franklin/Genius

4 posts in this topic

They arrived today and they will be nice partnered with the Franklin commems. This is from the Monnaie de Paris and is a restrike of the 1784 medal the Paris Mint produced to honor Franklin. The obverse, showing the bust of Franklin, notes that he was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. On the reverse, "Genius" is shown holding back a lightning bolt, denoting his achievements as a scientist, while pointing to the broken crown and sceptre of the British monarchy. The original medal was designed by Augustin Dupre, and this restrike has been produced from the original dies in observance of the 300th Anniversary of Franklin's birth.
