Do *new* coins excite you?

16 posts in this topic

You go to the store, pay your $2, you get change and there is a new 2003 Penny in your hand.... or a new Illinois State Quarter in your hand, does this stuff excite you? In consecutive days I received both coins in change and although it doesn't mean a thing in the grand scheme of things, it just seemed so exciting.

I don't care what it is, share your coin story!

I still give "new" change a good look when I first get it. When I was a kid, my friends and I would furiously look through our change to see who could find what denominations first after the new year. Same thing with trying to find branch mint coins each year.

I dig it Daddy-o, I remember being really excited when I first saw a coin with the year 2000 on it. I thought that was really cool.

Every year, I get really excited about getting a newly minted coin. Ironically my local bank never has bank rolls of new coins but from time to time my local Dunkin Donuts gets bank rolls with new pennies/nickles/dimes and silly me... I ask them for the rolls smile.gif I've only opened one roll in the past 2 years (2001-2002) and as luck would have it, I found a few 2002 dimes that has filled/partially filled dies (the last 2 in 2002 did not show on some of the dimes)

I'd love to open up the 2001 pennies to see if there are any type 2's in them but they are wrapped in tin foil, enclosed in a Glad sandwich bag and in a tote for safe keeping. Anything special with the 2002's? 2003...if anyone has any new information?

When does one seek therapy? I scan every single coin I receive in change for anything out of the ordinary? Am I a psycho or a coin collector?

Nickles... Are we really going to see two types of Nickles this year? or is it just a pipe dream?

I always look at my change to see if I received anything interesting 893crossfingers-thumb.gif, but I don't get too excited about 'new' coins. I do get excited if I receive silver in my change. 893applaud-thumb.gif I would also get excited if I were to find any coin from before 1950 but I can't remember the last time that has happened! 893scratchchin-thumb.gif893frustrated.gif

Dave,

Yes!!! It does excite me! I dont save much of anything that I receive as change though, unless it's a wheaty or something in silver, ( which really doesn't happen any more.)

Sometimes, there are acceptions to the rule!!!! grin.gif

Today, I received a 03 D Jefferson with some change. OK, no big deal, but, it's something that I find interesting and worth keeping ( for a short while ) because the US mint sets are not availible until June 16. And it has a very nice yellow tone to it as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do I look through my change often?? YES!! Why not!! You never know what could be lurking in you pocket full of change!!!!

The first few "new releases" are always exciting, but after a little bit, the excitement wears off (especially after you stockpile quite a few of the new year).

What I'm finding more exciting right now is the fact that we're finally getting some new designs for our circulating coins. THAT is something that has taken FAR too long.

Yikes! Maybe I'm in the wrong hobby. I never look at it. Well, I shouldn't say, never, but I don't routinely check my change. I'm envious of those of you who still get a kick out of that. I do remember the time, but unfortunately for me, it no longer does the trick. Unless I find an early dollar or DCAM Frankie in the mix, it ain't going to trip my trigger.

Feel the same way. But you might appreciate this - about two months ago i got a shield nickel (good at best) in change! Can you imagine? (am dead serious - and to top it off - got it in a downtown San Francisco Starbucks! Just off Beale Street a few blocks from Market).

Okay, perhaps I should have said "new" and "unusual"... as I do also love to hear that certain "clink" that a silver coin makes as it hits the bi-metals of other coins! At one time I even frowned upon receiving foreign coins in change but now I have a seperate box for all the ones I get.

A shield Nickle huh? Where did you get that in change? I might want to start shopping at that store smile.gif

That was probably "seeded" into circulation by a collector/hoarder. I've been guilty of this - sticking the occasional AG/G buffalo, indian, or mercury into the local "economy". I get a kick out of thinking it may make someone's day. grin.gif

Of course, the sad part is when Joe Common takes a G+ 1937 Buffalo into the coin shop thinking his ship has come in ! 893whatthe.gif

A shield nickel! Now that is something to get excited about. 893applaud-thumb.gif

I wonder if Sunnywood has been to San Francisco lately? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

I was playing nickle machines at a casino in Atlantic City a couple of years ago and a Buffalo nickle popped out. Interesting.
