Is this a die crack?

11 posts in this topic

Typically, a die crack will not change the value of most coinage. There are exceptions however, such as with the Bearded Goddess CBH. As for Morgan dollars and this Morgan dollar in particular, I really could not definitively tell you, but my guess would be that there would be no change in value.

Die cracks on Morgan $'s are pretty common and do not add any premium in most instances. If you take a look through the Van Allen/Mallis "Encyclopedia" you will rarely find them listed unless they serve as a die marker for another more meaningful attribute.

The '99O that I have has a die crack that extends the full 360 degrees around the perimeter of the reverse.

This particular die-crack is a common phenomenon of die fatigue, and not worth a premium. Indeed, as such a defect weakens the ability of the die to impart a good strike, it may indirectly lead to lower value (not the case here, however). It is, however, an excellent item for numismatic conversation.

Good Question on the Die Crack and I'm glad that you asked since I have a '99 O with the same feature. At first I thought it was a scratch put on be a previous owner (or someone "playing" with the coin). Thanks for all the responses! thumbsup2.gif
