What to do with scratched 1839-O 1/2 dime repunched dt

3 posts in this topic

please be patient while pictures load This is an 1839-O (regular O) That is an excellent coin in AU or UNC condition, but which has scratches on it (pointed out in purple).

The coin also appears to have a re-punched date on the obverse, and a clashed die, or doubling on the reverse. Also noticiable near the ME in AMERICA on the rev. (pointed out in red)-- (see photos).

Would NGC grade this coin giving it credit if I ask for variety+, or, due to the "graffiti", would they return it, ungraded.???

As a newbie I appreciate any help in this matter.

Your coin could be placed in an NCS Details Grade holder. Your coin would be encapsulated with a grade of the details and noting the scratch. Unfortunately, NCS also would not recognize that variety.
