How will tone affect a graded proof?

2 posts in this topic

I have a nice graded Franklin half in an NGC holder, but I can see that some rainbow tone is appearing around the rim and a few millimeters onto the fields on both sides. How will this affect the grade moving forward? Being that eye appeal is subjective, and some dont like tone, will this coin retain its grade?

Light, unobtrusive haze or toning is acceptable on proof coins. Once the thickness of haze or toning is unattractive or hinders the clarity of the mirrored fields, then the grade will be affected. If the coin you are referring to is the 1960 Proof Franklin half you posted on the coin forum, the peripheral tone appears attractive and certainly ok for a 66 grade.

Thanks,
