Silver Rounds/Bars collecting question...

3 posts in this topic

I've been recently looking at Silver Rounds. Are they worth anything more than their spot value? I'm talking about the ones I'm mentioning below. Do they have any value beyond the intrinsic value?

I ask because I've noticed alot of rounds that are "limited mintings", like the Elizabeth 5 Dollar 1 oz., the Australian Kookaburra, and the Mexico Silver Libertad. They sound gimicky but are 1 oz .999 and are some are really beautiful.

I guess I'm asking about Art Silver bars and rounds. Do any silver bars/rounds have value beyond spot value? Is they are collecting community of Bullion?

Thanks in advance.

There is a collector base of silver rounds/bars, but I don't know that much about it. Quite a few of yesterdays (rounds) are in demand with collectors of exonumia, a few that come to mind are the So-Called Dollars with the Pedley-Ryan issues of 1933, the Colorado issues of 1933 and the Montana dollar from the same year, you could call the Colorado & Montana pieces medals, but each has a 1 oz of silver designation. The Bowers & Merena Griffen round is referenced in Rulau's book on Washingtonia. Also another area that I have seen a lot of interest are the Casino Silver Strike tokens. There are quite a few commemorative (rounds) or medals that I do find interesting that aren't purely bullion pieces like the Eagles etc.

These mentioned, and the American Eagle silver dollars, are not just rounds, they are also legal tender coinage. These usually carry a slight premium to rounds and bars.

There is, but there are not many collectors. That said, the bars taken from the shipwrecks and those preserved from the "old days" and also those mentioned by dealmakr (e.g., the SC dollars) carry a collectors premium due to demand.

Modern rounds and art bars are marketed like mad at ridiculous premiums to bauble collectors, but typically trade in the silver market for discounts below that of name-recognized (and often registered) bullion bars and rounds, e.g., Engelhard or Johnson Matthey.
