How many 16-D dimes are there?

We've been trying to get a handle on this on the PCGS boards and estimates have ranged from about 3,000 to over 100,000. Seems odd that there wouldn't be more agreement. Does anyone have any thoughts to add to the discussion. Anything.

The estimate of 100,000 seem ridiculously high since there were only 264,000 minted. I seem to recall a discussion on the PCGS boards perhaps two years ago where we went through the same problem and I don't know what, if anything, we agreed on. If one were to include counterfeit '16-D dimes then I might embrace the 100,000 number. Otherwise, this is much too high.

I have seen that 10,000 number before. That maybe right but I don't know how anyone would ever know???
