Per Cent off & weight question

2 posts in this topic

When a coin is slabbed as clipped, the label always states something like 10% Curved Clip. When there is more than one clip, the holder will state something like Double Curved Clips - but not a %. Elliptical clips do not indicate a per cent missing, but have a weight indicated. Straight Clips have both a % and weight indicated. Why are these types of clips handled and holdered differently. Thanks

Hi,

I am posting this response for Dave Camire, our resident error expert:

If a clip is less than 10% then it is just listed as a clip (ie; curved, straight, etc). If a clip is 10% or more it is listed as such on the holder (ie: 15% curved clip). Clips are listed in increments of 5% (or rounded to such). If a curved clip is 75% or larger, it will say this or crescent clip. Multiple clips are just listed as such (or may include the clock positions of the clips.) Straight/Ragged clips are harder to gauge, so weight is also used to arrive at this percentage (and is included on the label). All straight/ragged clips are also rounded to the nearest 5% increment.
