Can anyone tell me if I'm looking at a die strike mistake?

Note that the coins is rubbed clean on the opposite side of the indentation.

I'm going to have to say post mint damage. It looks like it got hit pretty hard with whatever made the mark on the obverse. It bent the coin enough to cause the uneven wear on the reverse.

I'll second that. The accumulation of natural oils plus oxidation causes the dark toning in the crease on the obverse.

Thanks for your repiles. I thought that when I saw the stress cracks on the reverse it was after mint damange.

Definitely a bent coin, crimped in some way. It's weird how often I've seen that particular type of damage on coins.
