General Question on Conservation

2 posts in this topic

Hi guys - there is a significant debate on these boards as well as across the street regarding the conserving of coins that are otherwise original and problem free. The perception is that these coins are fine and numismatically appealing as is and do not need to be legitimately conserved. Would you mind sharing your policy regarding this matter?

Every coin is different when it comes to its conservation. NCS performs its services at the request of a submitter. A coin is sent to NCS because the submitter believes that some aspects of the coin’s surface will benefit from conservation. Even in instances when a problem is not readily apparent, many coins sent to NCS have PVC residue or some similar residue that will cause deterioration over time. The conservation process attempts to neutralize the coin’s surface curtail the degradation caused by surface contaminants. There are also many instances when a coin will be passed on for conservation and returned to the submitter as is due to its attractive appearance and lack of potentially harmful residues. If there are any residues, however, those will be addressed through the conservation process. Additionally, a great number of coins sent to NCS do not look significantly different after conservation work has been performed, yet these coins are seldom identified as conserved.
