We placed the 2005 SMS coins in MS slots for several reasons. First, the methods of manufacture of SMS and MS coins are very similar, differing only in die treatment. And clearly many 2005 SMS coins are indistinguishable from business strike coins. Second, we did not want to double the number of required coins in the Registry for 2005, especially as the 2005 coins were not always qualitatively different.

 

That said, we will shortly be adding and SMS-Only 2005 Mint Set.
