I'll have to admit that I was very disappointed when I lost the auction for the '69 ANA Medal Set last week. I expected that it would be even harder just to locate another. But, that is the risk I must assume when I am competing with others for the same object of desire.

Fortunately, the agony of defeat becomes a trivial matter when I consider that I am blessed with a small circle of friends who are there when I need them. Victor "EZ" Easley is one of those friends.

EZ gave me a "heads up" when he located another set. It turned out to be a gold mine for me. Not only did I win the '69 ANA - Philadelphia set for $54, but I also won the '70 ANA - St. Louis, the '71 ANA - Washington, D.C., the '72 ANA - New Orleans, the '73 ANA - Boston, the '74 ANA - Bal Harbour & the '75 ANA - Los Angeles......all from the same seller. The entire lot of seven, 3-medal sets only cost me $290.08.

Now, I'm still looking for the 1990 Liberty Numismatic Society medal that was designed by DWLange . I believe that Hoot is interested in this one, too. If anyone should learn of its availability, please let us know. I will give Hoot the first shot at this one, because I certainly got the better deal for the ANA medals.

Is patience a virtue? You bet it is!

Way to go Chris!!!!! I felt bad for you when you did not get that first 69 Set----but, as we all know, it is better to be gracious and a gentleman. Both of which you were. And now look how you have been rewarded----with great good fortune!!! Happy for you my friend. Congrats. Bob [supertooth]

Chris, good things come to those who wait. Afterall, it took 57 years for me to come into your life, puddin' pop. 893whatthe.gifforeheadslap.gif893whatthe.gifforeheadslap.gifgrin.gif

I've been on a medal buying spree lately, too. The two ANA medals that I picked up are the 1977 Atlanta web page and the 1980 Cincinnati web page

as well as three national parks silver 38 mm medals from 1972:

1) MT. MCKINLEY NATIONAL PARK PURE SILVER MEDAL 1972

2) REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK PURE SILVER MEDAL 1972

3) BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK PURE SILVER MEDAL 1972

I also was very, very fortunate in that I got the very last two 2005 2.5" bimetallic ANA San Francisco Medals which are now sold out. I got heads up about it in an article in Numismatic News. By the time Coin World and Numismatists ran the story, it was already sold out. So, in this case, the early bird got the worm. (But remember that even though this may be true in this case, sometimes it is more advantageous when the second mouse gets the cheese. tongue.gif)

Anyway, I also like the 1969 ANA Medal but Chris was more deserving even though I did razz him that I would bid $500 bucks on it to throw his Bid Napper into a frenzy. He then non-chaulantly (gee, my spelling is getting bad. Must be because I'm turning 40 in October.) replied, "Well then, I'll just bid $499 and let you have it." Geez, what a 893censored-thumb.gif! tonofbricks.gif

Well, we both got ours and all is happy so all is cool. cloud9.gif

Interesting, I didn't know the ANA medals were so collected.

Merc, there were not very many of them produced. My interest in these medals was piqued when I read Hoot's excellent article, Gasparro's Liberty , in the June issue of CW's Coin Values. I thought Gasparro's concept for the dollar coin was beautiful, and it was a shame that it was never adopted. It was taken from his design of the '69 ANA Convention medal.

I reasoned if I couldn't have the (U.S.) coin, I'd take the medal. In my search for it, I learned that it was produced in a set of three - one in silver, one in bronze and the third in antique bronze. The seller that Victor alerted me to also had other years available, some of them were 3-medal sets and some were 2-medal sets. I chose to pass on the 2-medal sets and those that Victor wanted, but I thought it appropriate that a "Queen" (Gasparro's Liberty) should have her court. The '69 Medal is the first of "my series" of seven consecutive years.

I consider the e-mail personal and confidential. If Mark had intended it to be open to public scrutiny, he would have posted it, here.

Now Chris, you know me better than that.I was not intruding on personal matters,I simply had a irresistable urge to commit a heinous act of dry humor.Certainly you wouldn't have any problems with that,am I correct?Don't make me send some of my boys after you.

Hayden, I figured that was your intent, but it gave me a perfect opportunity to invoke the 5th Amendment and put this to rest for everyone.

Anyway, we've gotten off the subject. I can't wait to get the ANA medals. Mark, have you received yours yet? I've already added to the collection by winning the '76 & '80 sets. And today, I received my order for a Bronze Liberty by Gasparro. It's 3-1/8" in diameter, weighs 13.3 ounces and is displayed in a beautiful mahogany case. Now, I need to find the '77, '78 & '79 ANA medals.

By the way, I got my '69-'75 ANA sets yesterday. They are all really nice. The '73 (Boston) has a depiction of the "Tea Party" and the silver medal is PL. Ponce de Leon looks quite sophistcated on the '74 (Bal Harbour), but none of them are as beautiful as Gasparro's Liberty. She is absolutely beautiful!

Hoot, in a way I'm glad the Mint didn't use her on the '79 $. It would have been too small a coin to do her justice.

I've noticed that some of the Capital (?) holders do not seal tightly, but that is okay because I was planning on taking them to NGC for the multi-coin holders anyway.

Now, TUBBY , will you quit changing the subject? devil.gif

I received the '76 - New York & '80 - Cincinnati ANA sets on Tuesday and I won the '79 - St. Louis in another auction but I haven't received it yet. I'm still looking for the '77 & '78 sets so if anyone happens to learn of them, please e-mail: cpm9ball@swfla.rr.com me.

This series is turning out to be awesome, but I am a little disappointed that NGC won't grade and encapsulate the ANA medals. It doesn't make sense when you consider that NGC is the Official Grading Service of the ANA . Why would they encapsulate casino cheques, but not ANA medals? I guess the "Fitzgerald Hoard" represents bigger bucks. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I think that the 1980 Cincinnati is an awesome design!! Very lovely, indeed as well as the 1977 Atlanta piece. They are reminescent of classic coinage designs.

Just got the '79 - St. Louis in the mail. Really cool! This is becoming loads of fun! Now, if I can just convince the Official Grading Service of the ANA to grade and encapsulate them in multi-coin holders. poke2.gifpoke2.gifpoke2.gif
