1883 cc Morgan error?
1 1

Welcome to the NGC chat board.

First of all, if your 1883-CC Morgan dollar were struck from a doubled die, it would be classified as a die variety, not a mint error. See Variety vs. Mint Error | NGC (ngccoin.com).  As the elements to which you refer as being doubled are on the reverse of the coin, this would be referred to as a doubled die reverse ("DDR"), not a doubled die obverse ("DDO").

The images of your screen that you transmitted are too washed out and pixilated to see clearly. Please transmit images directly from your computer, including clear, cropped images of each full side of the coin, as well as pertinent closeups. You should not need more than 10x magnification to identify any significant die variety. Attributors such as those at NGC and the authors of The Cherrypickers Guide to Rare Die Varieties recommend 5x to 7x for this purpose. (Mint errors generally require no magnification to see.)  Based on the present images, the shallow, shelflike secondary image on "GOD WE" appears to be strike doubling, also known as machine or mechanical doubling, which results from a normal die being loose in the press, is very common, and of no collector value. See Double Dies vs. Machine Doubling | NGC (ngccoin.com).

The die varieties of Morgan and Peace dollars have been extensively studied by Messrs. Van Allen and Mallis and their successors and are described and illustrated on vamworld.com. 1883-CC varieties are listed at http://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1883-CC_VAMs. There are no doubled die varieties known to exist. The VAM 5 variety and its die states (A through D) have a repunched mintmark (CC/CC). You should see if your coin matches the VAM 5 variety and, if not, check it against the others. None of these 1883-CC varieties appears to be particularly rare or popular.

Hello and welcome!

After some quick checking, I note there is no DDO/DDR listings for the 1883 CC Morgan Dollar. Those varieties I have checked into also for this year involve a repunched date on the obverse die, as well as some die markers to check for the correct VAM for a CC/CC such as a wing scratch on the reverse as well as other markers. That said, most of these VAM's are not widely recognized and many would not be attributed by a TPG.

The only way for us to maybe be able to tell is if you were to provide us with clear, fully cropped images of both sides of your coin, and not high mag images but images naturally shot of both sides of the coin. Given those, we could maybe be able to verify if there are any die markers present associated with any potential VAM's. If you do provide these photos, it seems any of those VAM's all have the date repunched so we would also need a clear non high mag closeup of the date on your coin.
