1988 D damaged penny

This coin has been in circulation for 36 years. What is the likelihood a mint-fresh coin released into circulation in 1988 -- looking like this, would not come to anyone's attention until 2024?  There is a question in my mind as to whether it is even worth one cent anymore.

should I put it in the trash?

No. Find a merchant who will accept it as face value. It is still able to be identified as one cent and as such is still acceptable as legal tender, but I could see some merchants being not willing to accept such a heavily damaged piece.

Forgive me for getting right to the point without proper pleasantries. Hello and welcome to the forum!
