You’re discounting the most likely scenario - that EC is doing the bringing into Rick’s shop. Appearance fees?

Can't see that.  He's a bigtime collector, not going to collect some nickels and dimes from "Pawn Shop."

Yes, but he is ALSO the first “whale” collector to ever participate in online forums, so there’s that.

Extra publicity before putting up his completed collection for auction? I do not buy this assertion, but put it out there for comment. Maybe he’s just having some fun with it?

Maybe , just Maybe - Kurt will become a Pawn Star fan.  Just kidding Kurt.

Did you cut OldHoopster slack when he repeatedly asked you to leave him alone?  The fact that you still drag him after his death is the reason I will show you NONE.

It's of no matter... because, you never intend to leave this forum.  You like to attention seek, so leaving takes away (what seems to be) your most common vehicle for this activity.  Interestingly, I do think you have some numismatic knowledge in there somewhere.  But, you don't commonly share it... and it's buried in word salad when you do.  I can say you have taught me nothing (which is not to say you owe me an education).

I wish you no ill will at all.  But, I want you to know that you have (nearly single handedly) ruined this forum with your behavior.  It's sad, because despite what you think... that will be your legacy to most here.  Once you are gone, perhaps discourse can continue without your derailments.  Thus, improving these boards overall.

So... do whatever you wish.  I am not signing off from the boards... I am just blocking you.  You have earned it.

...so aptly put...n on so many different levels, i have an old friend from my military days who now teaches psychology at one of the top medical schools in the country n ask him to look at a couple hundred of u know who's postings...his observations were very profound...if ever interested i could pm them to u....

1) Don’t expect to EVER catch me in Vegas.

2) If 1) fails, don’t ever expect to catch me in that store.

Not the 1933, but maybe you can Join Jeff and his wife for dinner after visiting the pawn shop. I just happened to see this which aired a couple nights ago (I think). Just kidding again Kurt - no offense implied.

I’m guessing Jeff gets to Vegas occasionally for the PCGS members only coin shows.

I imagine that you are correct. Fun stuff for him. I am still debating whether I’ll go to Rosemont or not. I believe you said you are going to miss this one - if I remember correctly.

Yup, this year I’m out. Too many post-surgical appointments to shlep my wife to after her hip replacement and subsequent dislocation. I had to cut my Summer Seminar trip short by two days after the dislocation.

Crud, I missed it but it should re-air.:frustrated:   New episode apparently, as it's not available on-demand like a few episodes that aired sequentially right before it.

But what are Ian Russell (on behalf of EC) and Jeff Garrett doing on the show ?  If Ian is selling the coin for EC, you don't go on Pawn Stars.  The coin is obviously legit and the real 1933 owned by EC.

I think this whole thing is a publicity stunt designed to get viewership or interest up for the coin....for GC.....and for the Pawn Stars TV show.

Can someone who saw it explain what transpired ?

It should be on for replay today. Having Jeff Garrett on to verify the authenticity was a bit much, but that’s show biz for ya. An offer was made.

Wonder who Rick is representing?  I have one guess, what about you?

Evidently, I missed the episode but that's okay.  I believe the '33 owner's willingness to cooperate and participate in this presentation reflects most favorably on him, and all those who had played a part in seeing this through.  You would not ordinarily see something like this as most owners understandably prefer to maintain anonymity, or a low-profile.

The coin's owner is a good sport and his amenability to a suggestion, that necessarily entails risk, is a welcome departure from that of the traditional cloistered, un-communicative collector.

It is a comfort to know there is a human element to the whales amongst us.

Thanks for posting this!  (thumbsu

As Goldfinger pointed out - No Sale. It was fun to see Ian Russell and Jeff Garrett in the same room discussing the coin. After all - it is entertainment. Maybe they should have had a special guest appearance by Hanson.

Seems my guess was correct - a cynical publicity stunt that never was a real attempt to sell the coin. Rick and his family are publicity whores, plain and simple. Rick wasn’t helping the hobby, the hobby was kissing Rick’s posterior. Shameful.

Read Ian's account over ATS.  Very honest and upfront.  EC said he was willing to sell the coin but Rick didn't get a buyer to meet his reserve.

No harm, no foul.  If this educates people about coins, who's hurt ?

Anyone who believes it was a serious attempt. Naïveté is so unattractive.

Of course it wasn’t a serious attempt to sell the coin, but it was entertainment. If it results in one person becoming interested in the hobby - it will be worth it. What it may do however, is turn the heads of people looking at only the $$$ and not the coin and story behind it. In any event it was fun seeing the episode and something other than error coins for a change.

He said he would have been a seller...a RELUCTANT seller.

Consider this....if he got the $30 MM, it would have represented an annualized 15% a year for the time EC held the coin.  That is one of the highest CAGR for a return on investment for any trophy coin that I can recall, outside of someone flipping a coin to the real buyer for a nice profit in a very short period of time.

This and other such shows are merely "eye-bait" to support advertising. Truth, accuracy, reality and not part of the scripts.

(But maybe those are nearly as limited as in numismatic ignorance and greed?)   ;)
