GoldFinger1969
Crud, I missed it but it should re-air. New episode apparently, as it's not available on-demand like a few episodes that aired sequentially right before it. But what are Ian Russell (on behalf of EC) and Jeff Garrett doing on the show ? If Ian is selling the coin for EC, you don't go on Pawn Stars. The coin is obviously legit and the real 1933 owned by EC. I think this whole thing is a publicity stunt designed to get viewership or interest up for the coin....for GC.....and for the Pawn Stars TV show. Can someone who saw it explain what transpired ? Henri Charriere
Evidently, I missed the episode but that's okay. I believe the '33 owner's willingness to cooperate and participate in this presentation reflects most favorably on him, and all those who had played a part in seeing this through. You would not ordinarily see something like this as most owners understandably prefer to maintain anonymity, or a low-profile. The coin's owner is a good sport and his amenability to a suggestion, that necessarily entails risk, is a welcome departure from that of the traditional cloistered, un-communicative collector. It is a comfort to know there is a human element to the whales amongst us. Thanks for posting this! GoldFinger1969

Popular Post Zebo
From Ian ATS: Hope everyone enjoyed it. We approached the show for a few reasons. Could they have a huge client who wants the most valuable coin? (If a deal is done and filmed in real time, how amazing would that be to be part of?) In general, it's great exposure for the hobby. It was Elite's idea initially and awesome how it all came together so quickly. We need as much exposure for coins as possible. At GC, we spent money on this endeavor because it's so important to attract collectors in the future. Elite really wants people to learn more about coins and see a rarity like the 1933. Pawn Stars has a vast viewership - and the majority is outside of the numismatic community. Rick's shop is impressive. The amount of foot traffic is astonishing. He has knowledge about coins. I wondered if he was going to call Steve Wynn or someone like that, he knows everyone in that town. I had several conversations with Elite in the lead up to the taping "okay, we need to be prepared that your complete Saint set is not complete anymore" - he would have been a very reluctant seller, but knew that was the purpose of the project. One other benefit, I got to hang out with Jeff Garrett after the taping - although I've known Jeff for years and we've done some business, I hadn't spent an afternoon with him before the day of the shoot in Vegas. We had a nice dinner at a classic Vegas restaurant after touring the Pawn shop. The security and insurance was probably the most difficult part to arrange. It's why it was not filmed at his shop. Their team were very helpful and ensured everything went to plan and the coin's time on site was kept to a minimum. Ian Also EC says he will show it at more shows in the future. nice of them to chime in. Zebo
Of course it wasn’t a serious attempt to sell the coin, but it was entertainment. If it results in one person becoming interested in the hobby - it will be worth it. What it may do however, is turn the heads of people looking at only the $$$ and not the coin and story behind it. In any event it was fun seeing the episode and something other than error coins for a change. Henri Charriere and GoldFinger1969 1

He said he would have been a seller...a RELUCTANT seller. Consider this....if he got the $30 MM, it would have represented an annualized 15% a year for the time EC held the coin. That is one of the highest CAGR for a return on investment for any trophy coin that I can recall, outside of someone flipping a coin to the real buyer for a nice profit in a very short period of time. RWB
This and other such shows are merely "eye-bait" to support advertising. Truth, accuracy, reality and not part of the scripts.
