Ezwolf
I never heard of a 1980 DDO of an earlobe. I thought this was post-mint damage at first but I googled it and on coin community.com they had a 1980 with a picture of a doubled earlobe. I'm not getting my hopes up until I hear from the experts. By the way is that machine doubling on the date thank you very much
Popular Post Sandon
I think that what you are seeing as a "doubled earlobe" is more likely a nick on this particular coin--which has many--than an indication of a doubled die. It doesn't resemble known significant doubled die varieties that have a doubled ear, such as the 1984, 1997 (which may be a damaged die rather than doubled die), or 2018-D. See Lincoln Cents, Memorial Reverse (1959-2008) | VarietyPlus® | NGC (ngccoin.com), Lincoln Cents, Bicentennial and Shield Reverse (2009-Date) | VarietyPlus® | NGC (ngccoin.com). You should check doubleddie.com and varietyvista.com, which list more minor varieties, to see if there is any such 1980 variety that is a match. If the coin was struck from a doubled die, there would be other pieces struck from that die, and the variety would likely have been discovered by now. Your images are too blurry to tell if the coin exhibits machine (a.k.a. strike or mechanical) doubling or other forms of "worthless" doubling. There appear to be extra outlines around all of the letters, numbers and devices on both sides. I would not use search engines such as Google to find information about coins. The varying results carry disinformation as well as information that may be correct. I would look at NGC VarietyPlus and Coin Explorer, PCGS Coinfacts, and the two sites that I mentioned. There are others that may be recommended for particular series, some of which are listed in the "Basic Resources and Glossary" topic pinned near the top of this forum. Coinbuf
As you were informed on the PCGS forum your coin is not an error nor is it the known DDO for 1980. Same coin same result
powermad5000
I would have to see a closeup of the earlobe to be able to give any opinion on this cent.
