It is not in any way an error, it is PMD caused by corrosion most likely from being buried.

Zinc is even more prone to corrosion than copper, and when a copper plated zinc cent is exposed to damp ground it literally starts to dissolve like this one.

Severely corroded. It was either buried or a parking lot coin for a long time. Once the plating on these zinc cents is compromised, the corrosion begins underneath the plating and once you see the plating bubbling up like that, the damage to the zinc core is even worse than what you see on the surface. Unfortunately for the cent you have, it has only one way it is going to go which is to finally corrode to the point that it is no longer and returns to the earth.

My preliminary diagnosis is "plasmodium falciparum."

A type of malaria, symptoms usually appear 10-15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

I do not know what the numismatic term is.  :makepoint:  doh!  :roflmao:
