curious split edge or "sandwhich" 1 1

this 2015 quarter i got from a friend of mine just looks odd i was looking around on google and i found the term split edge and sandwiched thru a search and apparently its a thing at least back in 78 and 69 i believe well just curious what your opinion is o n this coin

They show up here quite often.  It looks to have been subjected to some type of corrosive chemical that affected the copper core more than the outer copper nickel layers.

Agree, it has been attacked with acid which eats away the copper core.   
Maybe someone making a small yo-yo.

I agree with the I.cutler and Greenstang something has eaten away at the core.

   This coin has been damaged by acid, resulting in its rough and discolored surfaces and the excessive loss of metal at its core.  

    If you thought the coin was collectable, you shouldn't have been holding it with your bare hands, except by its edges if you must. Skin oils can also be quite detrimental.
