sydneyra Posted March 29 Share Posted March 29 Found this 1972 Quarter which has a filled in D on the front, but on the back I noticed that around almost the entire edge of the coin theres a cut that goes through most of the letters. Sandon Posted March 29 Share Posted March 29 Welcome to the NGC chat board. Please post photos of both sides of a coin about which you have questions. The "cut" you describe is exactly that--a cut or scratch--possibly made by a roll wrapping machine, after the coin left the mint. Such post-mint damage is by definition not a mint error and adds no value. Assuming that the coin has a filled mintmark, whether "as made" or from subsequent wear or damage, this would also add no value. A circulated 1972-D quarter (over 311 million issued) presently has no collector value and is worth its face value of 25 cents. Greenstang Posted March 29 Share Posted March 29 The filled D is what is known as a broken post, quite common on D and P mintmarks. The circle on the reverse is as Sandon stated, probably caused by a coin wrapping. or other type of machine. It did not happen during the striking of the coin.
