1982 penny

You should weigh it on a scale that reads to the nearest hundredth gram, and if/when it proves to be a brass plated zinc example, you can put it in a coin album or holder as one of the 7 regular types of cents coined that year by the mint, or spend it, whichever you see fit. It would not grade high enough to make it worth sending it in to be certified.

Also perfectly normal. Now, if you could (and trust me, you CAN’T) find one that is BOTH a 1982-D small date AND weighs 3.11 grams, THAT would be the winner. But as I said, you won’t find one, as in ever.

Welcome to the NGC chat board.

This is a common 1982 small date copper (brass) and in this lightly circulated and brown condition worth face value. Seven of the now eight known composition (copper or copper-plated zinc) and hub (large or small date) combinations of 1982 and 1982-D cents are all very common, with likely mintages of hundreds of millions or billions of coins each. They only have collector value in full red uncirculated condition, and only have significant value sufficient to submit to a third-party grading service in extremely high "Gem" grades like MS 67 RD or higher. You wouldn't receive such coins in change.

The eighth combination, the 1982-D small date in copper (brass) composition (3.11 grams) is extremely rare, and only a few pieces have ever been found. You probably would have a better chance of winning the Mega Millions lottery than finding one.

Not once, but TWICE!

I think you meant to say the brass cent that weighs about 3.11g

I also have a 1982 Small Date no mint that weighs 3.11 grams

It seems like you are hunting for the super rare 1982-D small date brass cent that weighs about 3.11g, which is a transitional off-metal planchet error. There are only two known to exist out of billions of cents struck that year so the odds of you finding one are virtually zero.

If it doesn't have a "D" mintmark, is a large date, or weighs about 2.50g then it's not the super rare one.  And if you decide you are going to continue down that rabbit hole and continue looking see the attached infographic to help with that search.

The rabbits at the bottom of that hole are mean, and they bite. To have a convention of all national lottery grand prize winners, you would need a decent sized ballroom. To have a convention of all 1982-D small date bronze finders, all you need is the closet in the worst room down at the Holiday Inn. There are literally more people who have won $1million+ lottery prizes TWICE.

So tell me truly, is there NOTHING else better that you can do with your time? If not, … wow, just wow!

Here’s a wild idea. Drop on down to the local community college and take a course in probability and statistics. You’ll be better off for having done so.
