Open and Unopened Proof Set

I have an unopened 1963 proof set. My question is should i open it and test my luck or sell it at a show?

Also, has anybody opened a 1964 and below proof set to find a valuable coin?

Any advice?

Open it. Most dealers will not buy a single unopened proof set. You can try eBay, but don't expect much of a premium.

 

Personally, to have a premium, I want the mint shipping box to be unopened. You can't reseal those. Individual proof sets can be sealed again with ease.

 

I've purchased unopened boxes (proof sets, mint sets, & SMS sets) and found nice coins. One box of SMS sets contained almost all doubled die Kennedy halves and several cameos. At the same time, a box of 1963 proof sets were dogs with lots of spots. It's a gamble.
