1940 canadian Penny error or PMD ?

Just found this coin in my old collection and was wondering if the coin had some kind of rare error or just PMD. The other side of the coin is in relatively good condition and shows no signs of man made damages and no major scratches are showing. The coin is bent slightly and the top of the leaf and 1 cent show some major doubling or some kind of damage, maybe die damage. What intrigued me the most is how that kind of damage or error could occur without damaging the other side of the coin.

That is nothing but damage.  When a coin is struck, it is flattened between the dies, when you see one bent out of shape like that, it's damaged. There is no way to say how the damage occurred, there are just too many ways it could happen.  No way it could happen during the minting process though.
