Coinbuf Posted April 14, 2022 Share Posted April 14, 2022 I think it may have been a planchet flaw perhaps a lamination that fell off before striking. I say before the coin was struck as that area goes under the star yet the star is unaffected by whatever is going on. It could also just be a stain, difficult to say from photos, as you have the coin in hand can you tell if there is a height difference between the fields and that area, By that I mean does the metal look to have a step up/down where the two meet.
