Does anyone know what this green stuff on the coin is, pvc maybe? Photos from NGC show it also, cert# 4391546-038, grade 67. Was thinking of buying but I dont know. Thanks for any answers.

I'd stay away from this one and wait for a better example. I guess if you wanted a place holder and could get this for dirt cheap, maybe, but I'd still pass.

Looks like classic PVC or such ( schmutz)🙀
Unfortunately stuff can and does appear after slabbing.

Hi Jimbo!

I think it may be PVC.  As James said, these things can appear on coins after they are slabbed.  When I worked at the coin shop, I saw a couple other certified coins that had PVC residue materialize after they were slabbed.  It's a pretty rare occurrence, but it does happen sometimes.  I'd find a different 1979-D if I were you, Jimbo.

If this is a coin you really want to buy I'd ask the seller (if on ebay) for some new photos.   It may be PVC and then again it could be a reflection in the photo.   If you are not able to get new photos or some assurance from the seller that the green is not there then I'd look for another coin too.

Edited to add:  From my understanding of how the NGC guarantee works you have no recourse with them if this is PVC, just food for thought.

Hey buddy. How awesome is this neighborhood!  Post- listen- make informed choice. Cost?  Free.  I would look around and as mentioned contact seller. Anyway my thoughts were to how giving this place is. JZ
