I've been looking in the catalogue and it states these are quite rare and have value. It's the (j) marked coin. And thoughts

I don't really know anything about these coins, but a quick google search gives a value of 50 cents.  Where are you seeing this high value?

Some of these have moderate value IF they are in the MS65 or higher range. But I have not seen any circulated coins that have value of much over a dollar

It’s a neat keeper only because 1950 was the first year of the new postwar coinage.

The proof  version is the rare one. Yours is a circulation strike, not a proof. There were 102,736,000 of these minted in 1950 at the Hamburg mint (J).

These were brought back to the USA by American soldiers stationed in Germany. Lots of low value European pocket change brought to the US in the 50s and 60s.
