US Mint Proof Sets and PVC?

I inherited some proof sets from the late 1960's.  Out of curiosity and for the learning experience since I personally never submitted a coin for grading before I was going to crack open a duplicate set and send it for grading with other coins I have.  I was told the cases for the proof sets could have possibly contained PVC.  Does anyone know if that's definitely true or not?  I understand some grading companies if not most will not grade and encapsulate a coin if contaminated...even if it's not obvious to the eye.
