Pictures will be necessary to identify for sure, but what you are describing sounds like a 1980 where the 0 took a hit and flattened the side.

As stated, pictures will be necessary to confirm but from what you say, it sounds like damage as there is no way that a D can be upside down during the minting process unless it was in the die in which case all coins produced from that die would also be upside down.
