This coin was in a roll that was sold to me as a BU. Does the rim damage keep it in the BU classification?

Yes, perhaps, it sort of depends on what you paid per coin for the roll.  In a perfect world yes it should have been disclosed as the value of that coin is basically its melt value, if you paid at or close to melt for the roll then its no harm no foul.  If you paid more than melt value per coin for the roll then I would have a discussion with the seller.

No it would not keep it from being "BU", as mentioned though it would keep it from straight grading.  It's value would be lessened, but I would not say down to melt value.
