The Ledford Collection
I have a question on 1 of 2 of my 2016 W 24K Gold Walking Liberty Centennial coins that were purchased from the mint. I have a spot on the obverse that I was wanting some advice on if I should have it graded or not due to the surface condition. Any help would be greatly appreciate. Coinbuf
Looks like a copper spot, I'm not up on the composition of these so I'm not sure if there is any copper in it or if anything can be done about it. I wouldn't spend the money to have it graded as is because that spot will very likely have a negative impact on the grade.
Conder101
Looks to me like a carbon spot from some organic matter on the surface that is decomposing. Something was on the surface when it was put in the holder and then broke down over time.
The Ledford Collection
Thank you both for your opinions! My main worry is that it could damage the coin however, as long as the bullion value is not affected I guess it would be foolish to add more expense to the coin. Your time has been much appreciated!
