Yes, that looks like a real one. Very deep wear, grade FA-2 to AG-3, but yes, that is a 1916-D Merc. Outstanding find, congrats. I bought one of those from a dealer for a friend a few years back in about that condition, paid about $575.

Excellent! An image of the reverse without the magnifying glass would be nice, but not critical. Here's a nearly identical AG3 sold in October for $410.
