thanks jtry!

i think that the cameo proofs are just as beautiful as the toned coins and are true expressions of the mintmasters art!

many of the 19 century cameo proofs silver and nickel from my experiences are actually as deep mirrors and frost

AND sometimes even moreso then modern federasl proof coinage!

also the older coins are much much more beautiful and with lots more character than most/many modern coins!

sincerely michael

also with ngc doing the pl and dmpl designations on all federal coinage this will show many that for example there can be barber coins say quarters dimes business strikes that are also deeply mirrored and quite beautiful as such but not proofs!

it will be a wild ride to see all the up and coming PL and DMPL designated coins that will come out in ngc holders!

this market will be improved as many can understand this better and also many of the older coinage is really beautiful and uncommon with pl and especially so dmpl mirrors on business strikes!

there is always something fun and interesting in coins and this pl and dmpl designation on all federal coinage from ngc is a really good step in the right direction

many barber coins in business strike format for example come in varying forms of prooflike!

some trade dollars also come deeply mirrored as business strikes!

i am sure there are other examples hey all you specialists out there comments please!

wow jtry look how sharp that crisp that strike is on that barber quarter of yours and then the strongly!! PL surfaces

coins like that are underapprecaited and really REALLY uncommon! most just do not understand these coins and are sleepers and extremely beautiful classic coins

i think this will make many more aware of these coins and a better appreciation of them! laugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.giflaugh.gif

michael, that is one of my favorite coins in my collection! I bought it about 3 or 4 years ago for $431, and at the time that was about $100 over bid, which at the time seemed kinda crazy to me, but I've never looked back! The point is, there are a lot of very nice coins out there that are available without much of a premium despite their eye appeal. Right now, toned coins are the rage, so there are lots of bargains in untoned coins like mine. Of course I won't argue about paying lower prices for coins I like better anyway! grin.gif

wow jtry neat! those are the coins to buy

the toned coins are for me good also and really most are not much of a premium

the problem is that the toned morgan dollars and the toned modern coins are bringing huge premiums and for me this is not good and not good values and NOT UNCOMMON COINS LIKE THAT!

but collecting is a personal thing

whereas early commems and pre 1915 coins and buff nicks and other coins are not really huge premiums for great toning but really uncommon as such i think these coins along with that barber quarter you got are really good deals and great values with the bonus being they are extremely attractive and great! values

Hi Michael,

Right now I am concentrating on early silver commemoratives.

I also collect Lincoln cents, Buffalo & Jefferson nickels, Mercury & Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, Walking liberty, Franklin, & Kennedy half’s, Peace & Morgan dollars. I also have a large collection of world coins.

I have liked collecting coins since I was a kid, but did not begin collecting seriously until about eight years ago. The sets I have listed in the registry are listed as The Wihlborg Collection.

Most of my sets are not listed because although the coins are nice mid to high grade mint state examples, they are raw. When I began putting these sets together there were no registries yet and I did not like the idea of having sets with coins in all different holders so I would crack them out and very carefully put them into albums.

Thanks for your very warm welcome

John

Oh I almost forgot!

I really liked the 1865 3 cent proof, the 1880s dollar, 1834 proof quarter, & 1828 half on the Inventory of Anaconda Rare Coins side & the 1880 dollar on the The Private Collection Of GSAGUY side of the monster toned coins site.

hi there john i see you are a true collector and i see you also like the early commems!

i do also! especially so the really neatly toned ones

i think many start in coins and then sort of sleep in the hobby only to awaken in future years and really start anew with really strong vigor!

i hope you enjoy these boards and hope to talk to you soon!

here is a attatchment of a toned boone commem

Hi Hoot,

Thanks for the welcome!

I am torn between leaving them in the albums and starting to have them slabed. About 80% of them were in holders when I bought them, but I just did not like having coins in the same series in different holders.

This was before the registry became big. Now it will cost so much to have them all slabed again and I think I would rather spend the money on more coins. They are all in Intercept Shield albums and to tell you the truth, I like the look of all the coins lined up row after row when looking at them.

Hi Michael,

Nice boone!

I prefer Blast white coins, but also like toned coins if the tone is the type where the color looks like it is in the metal with luster shining through as opposed to where it looks dull and dirty or sitting on top of the coin's surface.

I really like the look of toned nickels and have a number of beautifully toned buffalo's and Jefferson's. My buffalo nickels are listed in the registry with photos, but the coins are much better as I just cannot seem to take really nice photos of coins.

Wow! John! Those are some lusty, lustry, lovely buffs!!! The reverse on that 1930 about knokced my socks off! It'll take me a while to recover from that smile.gif. All of them have great lustre and the colors on the 30, 35, and 38 (those in particular) just blew me away! Great stuff.

By the way, I get to feeling the same about the albums - just too many coins to have graded. Besides, I like a great looking album collection and even crack coins to place in my albums smile.gif. I also have Intercept Shield albums for my better stuff. I like the design, but the choice of slots in many of them was poorly thought out. That's the way it goes, I guess!

Thanks Hoot!

I really wish I could take better photos of my coins; they are much nicer when looking at them in person.

I am sure that anyone who is not a photographer knows what I mean. When looking at them under a light they come alive with color and luster! cool.gif Then you take photo after photo trying to capture that look, but all you can manage are photo's that look lifeless. frown.gif

Oh well I'll just keep trying and post the best I can do. crazy.gif

John,

I agree with Hoot about your 1930. The reverse is really great with the subtle (at least in the photo) violet shading around the edges of the beast. If you took that photo, then you're doing something right!

Beijim

thanks for the link hoot! john you have a rreally goos eye with those buffs and they look great

they must be really impressive in person i can imagine!

here is a 1937 d buff ngc ms 67 and as with your coins the photo barely does justice to the coin also the coin doesnot look fully struck anf this is just the photograph in person this coin is easily 100% fully struck but to get what the colors look like this coin shows a weakly astruck coin which is not the case

or the photo could have shouls the coin as it really is fully struck 100% then you would not have seen the true colors so i guess it is either or as you cant get the way the coin looks truely as the human eye sees it

i guess for most coins the science of imaging has not fully progressed to that point yet

i would love to see that 30 35 and 35 of johns in person!

and john is right the lustre must be incredible with the toning combined to make a really excpetionally toned coin

now as hoot has commented on this buff the above coin ngc ms 67 he says it looks weakly struck to him and it does FROM THE SCAN!! but this is not the case as the coin is momnster fully struck 100% with fantastic prooflike lustre boopm ing thryogh the toning but to let the toning show on this coin light was needed and as such this made the indian and its hair and brade look weakly struck

and if the coin was this weakly struck as from the photo pic the coin would never have made 67 but t this is not the case sight seen unfortunately all we have is the photo and you can either show a fully struck coin and miss the toning in the scan or show the toning but with the right light needed it obscures the strike

currently even with all our technology in showing images still nothing repleaces the human eye currently

again john i would love to see in person the 30 35 and 38 which is my fav!

Thanks for the invitation, Michael. I've been to Rochester once many years ago. It seemed like a very pleasant place. I'm sure my dog-ter would enjoy the area, especially during the winter.

Are their *any* coin shows in the Rochester area?
