1984 P Dime, need help with what is going on here. Polished Die? rare or not?

For the most part, I am asking for several reasons;

  1. To satisfy my curiosity of what is going on here.
  2. To learn more about the process of minting coins and how all these error or defects come about.
  3. is it even worth Slabbing so I can display it and use as a conversation piece.

The more I know about the coin the more I can talk about why I like it.

Thank you for your time.

Though are die filing lines, probably the result of erasing some flaw in the die. The usual culprit is a die clash, in which each die receives an inverted impression of the other. When spotted by a press operator, the offending dies may be given some filing or polishing to eradicate the clash marks.

Interesting, Thank you @DWLange. So, had the press operator not notice, the coin would have an impression of the obverse on the reverse?

Is this common, to see the file marks? if I send this in to get slabbed, will it come back as a standard dime?

What would be the grade?

Thank you for all the help.

Assuming that the die filing resulted from an attempt to remove clash marks then yes, there would have been inverted images of the opposite die on both sides of the coin.

Die filing/repolishing typically is performed with a bit more skill than shown on this coin. Perhaps the press operator did it himself to avoid the hassle of removing the dies for transmittal to the engraving department for finer work. He may have just filed them in place.

Such lines are visually distracting and may impact the grade negatively.
