It looks like the piece attached to the obverse has been caved in, but, at one time, it was convex, and flexible. You could push it in and hold the coin in water, then release the pressure on the coin, and it would draw water through the hole into the void between the metal piece and the coin. Hold it up close to someone's face and tell them to look at the hole in your coin, then press the metal part, and it would squirt water in their face.

It is a trick squirting nickel.
