Cloth strike?

It looks like a palm print that has caused toning of the copper. Since toning does not just sit on the surface like dirt, it can not be wiped off.

While we are on the subject, wiping your coins is not a good habit to get into. While it won't really matter on this circulated modem cent pulled from pocket change, on an uncirculated or proof coin, it could quite literally turn a $10,000 coin into a $200 coin.

Thank you,  I appreciate the advise,  I woulnt wipe anything valuable,  I just rinse off these common coins im pulling. Thank you for the answer on my question,  that makes sense :)
